The Arupadai Veedu — "the six battle camps" — are the six holiest shrines of Lord Murugan, each associated with a key episode from his mythology. They are among the most visited temples in South India, particularly during Thaipusam and Skanda Sashti.
The Six Shrines
- Thiruparankundram — carved into a granite hill near Madurai; one of the oldest Murugan temples.
- Thiruchendur — the only coastal temple in the circuit, where Murugan defeated the demon Soorapadman.
- Palani — a hilltop temple reached by cable car or 659 steps; Murugan is depicted as a young ascetic.
- Swamimalai — where Murugan taught the meaning of Pranava (Om) to his own father, Shiva.
- Thiruttani — on the Andhra border; Murugan rested here after his battle with Soorapadman.
- Pazhamudircholai — the only forest shrine, near Madurai; where Murugan is surrounded by the hills he loves.
Best Season
Thai Poosam (January–February) draws millions to Palani. Skanda Sashti (October–November) is observed at all six temples with fasting and grand processions. Year-round, early morning darshan before 7 AM at each temple offers a quieter, more intimate experience.
