| history |
HISTORY OF ARULMIGU KAPALEESWARAR KARPAGAMBAL TEMPLE

The Kapaleeswarar temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was built around the Seventh Century. The temple stands as a unique example of Dravidian architectural style with its elaborate and intricately carved gopurams, Mandapams and a tank. The temple tank is in the west side, surrounded by four broad streets.

The inscriptions in the premises of the temple date back to 1250 AD. It is believed that the temple was built by the ruling Pallava Dynasty around 8th century AD, but may have been destroyed by the Portuguese and rebuilt by the Vijayanagar Kings of the Tuluva dynasty (1491-1570 CE).

Thalamai, research scholar from Greece visited this place 2000 years ago. He had mentioned the name of this place as malliarpa as this was the habitat of beautiful Peacocks. The peacock uttered sounds like ldquo Arpu in Tamil and the place came to be known as Mayil (peacock). It was called Mayil arpu which later colloquially became Mylapore. Goddess Parvathi is worshiped in the temple and has been incarnated as Goddess Karpagambal or the Goddess of the Wish-Yielding Tree.

Goddess Uma Performed penance here taking the form of a peacock.

This is the 24th Shiva temple in the Thondai Nadu region praised in Thevaram hymns. Great Saivite Saints, Thirugnana Sambandar, Thirunavukarasar, and Sundarar have sung the glory of Lord Kapaleeswarar in their hymns.

According to ancient legends and history, this temple is associated with many divine incidents that reflect how the name mylai came to existence. All the highlight the significance and effectiveness of uttering the words Om Nama Shivaya.

Once, Goddess Uma desired to know the complete interpretation of the five letter mantra Na Ma Shivaya and the splendor of the sacred ash (Vibuthi). Goddess Uma persuaded Shiva to touch teach her. Shiva consented and commenced teaching. However Goddess Uma was distracted by a beautiful peacock and her attention wandered. Siva was infuriated and cursed her to go to sacred Thondai Nadu and perform penance. Goddess Uma worshiped the Shivalinga under the punnai Tree in the temple vicinity. Moved by Goddess Uma utmost devotion, Lord appeared before Her and released Her from the curse and fondly called her Karpagavalli. Goddess Uma requested Lord Shiva to name the place Mylapore and stay back with her to bestow blessings on all the devotes. Accordingly, Mylai became the abode of Kapaleeswarar and Karpagambal.

There is another legend associated with Mylai being called Kapaleeswaram. Lord Brahama thought that he was as great and equal to Lord Shiva as he too had five heads. Shiva known for his spontaneous reaction decided to teach Brahma a lesson and cut down his ego. Shiva nipped one head and held the skull in his hand. Kapala in Sanskrit means skull. Therefore Lord Shiva was praised as Kapaleeswarar and the place of worship is called Kapaleeswaram.

The temple was also patronized by the great Tamil saint Thirugnana Sambandar. He sang the first hymn Matita Punnaiangal in praise of Kapaleeswarar and made Myalai famous as a divine worship center. It was here that Sambandar restored Poompavai to life from the bones and ashes preserved by her father Sivanesar with the fond hope that one day she will come back to life. Poompavai's father wanted her daughter to be married to a saint. But she died of snakebite and her father preserved the bones in a pot which he handed over to the child saint when he visited Mylai. Sivansar narrated the painful story and placed the pot before the saint. Sambandar sang (10 verses athigam) with the beginning Mattita Punnai listing the various festivals of Lord Shiva in the first three lines asking how she can miss them. The pot broke to pieces and the pretty Poompavai emerged. Sivanesar asked the saint to accept his daughter. Sambandar told him that he had now become her father as he had given her life again. Poompavai spent the rest of her life alone praying to Lord Shiva till she attained salvation.

HIGHLIGHTS OF KAPALEESWARAR TEMPLE

* Goddess Uma in the guise of Peacock worshiped Lord Shiva
* Lord Muruga got his Sakthivel from Lord Shiva and Mother Uma
* Lord Brahma got back his job of creation after shedding his pride
* Vedas worshiped Lord Kapaleeswarar and hence Mylai is known as Vedapuri
* Sukaran prayed to Lord Shiva here. Hence Mylai is also called Sukarapuri
* Lord Sri Rama stayed here and performed pujas to Lord Shiva with festivals
* In this holy soil, Thirugnana Sambandar restored Poompavai from her ashes and preserved
bones.
* Birthplace of saint Vaylar, one of the 63 saints
* Birthplace of peiazhwar, one of the twelve azhwars,
* Saint Arunagirinathar sang the glory of Lord Singaravelan in Thirupugazh.
* Birthplace of the great saint and poet Thiruvalluvar whose Thirukural is a classic Tamil Sangam
literature consisting of 1330 couplets
* On this holy soil, Saint Sambandhar sang the first piece of literature Muttatta Punnayam.

FLAG POLE

The flagpole is at the west entrance facing Nandi and Shiva Lingam. On the side is the sacrificing platform. The flag pole has been given a new looking with gold plating on top.

In the temple, special pujas are performed on auspicious days and Pradosham days. The temple attracts thousands of devotees on the pradosham day when the temple vibrates with Lingashtakam.

PUJAS

Pujas in this temple are performed as ordained in the Agama Sastra. The temple priests perform pujas on all days including festival days. The temple rituals are performed six times a day.

Mylapore`s Ancient Past :

Ptolemy, the Creek Geographer (A.D. 90-168) has referred to Mylapore in his books as & lsquo Millarpha,. It was here that Sambandar restored Poompavai to life from the bones and ashes preserved by her father Sivanesar with the fond hope that one day she will come back to life. | sthala_puran | HISTORY OF ARULMIGU KAPALEESWARAR KARPAGAMBAL TEMPLE The Kapaleeswarar temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was built around the Seventh Century. HIGHLIGHTS OF KAPALEESWARAR TEMPLE * Goddess Uma in the guise of Peacock worshiped Lord Shiva * Lord Muruga got his Sakthivel from Lord Shiva and Mother Uma * Lord Brahma got back his job of creation after shedding his pride * Vedas worshiped Lord Kapaleeswarar and hence Mylai is known as Vedapuri * Sukaran prayed to Lord Shiva here. FLAG POLE The flagpole is at the west entrance facing Nandi and Shiva Lingam. On the side is the sacrificing platform. The flag pole has been given a new looking with gold plating on top. In the temple, special pujas are performed on auspicious days and Pradosham days. The temple attracts thousands of devotees on the pradosham day when the temple vibrates with Lingashtakam. PUJAS Pujas in this temple are performed as ordained in the Agama Sastra. The temple priests perform pujas on all days including festival days. The temple rituals are performed six times a day. Mylapore`s Ancient Past : Ptolemy, the Creek Geographer (A.D. 90-168) has referred to Mylapore in his books as & lsquo Millarpha,. It was apparently a well-known seaport town with a flourishing trade. It must have also been a place of culture, as Saint, Tiruvalluvar the celebrated author of Thirukural, the World-famous ethical treatise, lived in Mylapore nearly 2,000 years ago. The Saivite Saints of the 7th Century, Saint Sambandar and Saint Appar, have sung about the Shrine in their hymns. Mylapore fell into the hands of the Portuguese in A.D.1566, when the temple suffered demolition. The present temple was rebuilt 300 years ago. There are some fragmentary inscriptions from the old temple, still found in the present Shrine and in St. Thomas Cathedral. One enters the hall then, where Arulmigu Karpagambal is enshrined. In front of the Goddess, outside, is a stone sculpture of a Lion, the mount of the Goddess. (Just as Nandi or the Bull is for Lord). Mylapore temple was patronized by the great Tamil saint Thirugnanasambandar. He sang the first hymn ldquoMatita Punniangalrdquo in praise of Kapaleeswarar and made Mylai famous as a divine worship center. It was here that Sambandar restored Poompavai to life from the bones and ashes preserved by her father Sivanesar with the fond hope that one day she will come back to life. Poompavairsquos father wanted his daughter to be married to a saint. But she died of snakebite and her father preserved the bones and ashes in a pot in ldquoAsthi Kotagai ldquo(The present Ramakrishna mutt temple). Sivanesar handed over the pot to the child saint when he visited Mylai. Sivanesar narrated the painful story and placed the pot before the saint. Samabandar sang 10 verses (pathigam) with the beginning Mattita Punniangalrdquo listing the various festivals of Lord Shiva in the first three lines asking how she can miss them. While singing the 9th padal (lyric) the pot broke into pieces and pretty Poompavai emerged. Sivanesar asked the saint to accept his daughter. Sambandar told him that he had now become her father as he had given her life. Poompavai spent the rest of her life alone, praying to Lord Siva till she attained salvation. Few families of Sivanesar clan are still alive and visiting the temple daily. |

| sthala_puran | Mother Uma wanted to know the full meaning of the five lettered Mantra – Na Ma Shi Va Ya – and the glory of the sacred ash. She begged Lord Shiva to teach Her on these topics. While Lord was teaching Her, Mother Uma was attracted by the beauty of a peacock dancing before Her. Lord, for Her inattention, cursed Her to become a peacock. For relief from the curse, He advised Her to go to Earth and perform penance on Him. Mother Uma worshipped the Shivalinga under the Punnai tree in this place. Moved by Her penance, Lord appeared before Her and confirmed Her release from the curse and named Her Karpagavalli. As requested by Mother Karpagavalli, Lord approved the name of the place Mayilai-now Mylapore. Lord Shiva in the temple is Swayambumurthi. Lord Brahma thought that He was as great and equal as Lord Shiva as He too had five heads as Shiva. To teach Him a lesson and to check His pride. Lord Shiva nipped one head and held the skull in His hand. Kapala in Sanskrit means skull, hence Lord Shiva was praised as Kapaleeshwara and the place KAPALEESHWARAM. Vedas worshipped Lord Kapaleeswara, hence the place is known as Vedapuri. It is also known as Shukrapuri as planet Shukra-Venus worshipped Lord here. Lord Sri Rama stayed here, performed pujas to Lord Shiva with festivals. The first piece of literature on this holy soil was the song of Saint Tirugnana Sambandar beginning with the line ‘Mattitta Punnayam Kanal’. These are the lines that brought Poompavai, daughter Sivanesar back to life, who died of snake bite while plucking flowers for Shiva Puja. After cremating her body, Sivanesar preserved the bones and ashes in a pot. During the visit of Sambandar to the place, as required by the Saint, Sivanesar placed the ash-bone pot before him. Sambandar sang a pathigam-10 verses, beginning with the line, ‘Mattitta Punnai’ listing the various festivals of Lord Shiva in the first three lines asking her in the final line, how she could miss the festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva. The pot broke off and Poompavai came alive in her full beautiful form. The girl came alive after this song. Poompavai spent the rest of her life as a virgin serving Lord Shiva and attained salvation. Before waging His war on demon Surapadma, Lord Muruga performed penance in this temple. Lord Shiva and Mother Uma blessed their Son and gifted the weapon VAEL to conquer the demon. Muruga returned triumphantly as Singaravelan on the demon peacock – demon Surapadma was changed to a peacock vahan of Muruga. Indira gave his daughter Deivanai to Lord Muruga in marriage. Iravadham, elephant belonging to Indira, could not bear the separation of Deivanai and chose to stay with her. As the divine Karpaga tree offers all wishes to a devotee, Mother Ambica offers all that Her devotees wish, hence praised as Karpakambika. Lord Vinayaka is praised in the temple as Nardana Vinayaka-dancing Vinayaka. Thalami, a researcher from Greece, visited this place 2000 years ago and had mentioned the name of the place as Malliarpa. This was the habitat of peacocks. As they made sounds – Arpu in Tamil – the place was known as Mayil (peacock) – Arpu, changed as Mayilappu and finally stayed with the name Mylapore. Great Saivite Saints Tirugnana Sambandar, Tirunavukkarasar and Sundarar had sung the glory of Lord Kapaleeswara in their Thevaram hymns. The commonly held view is that the temple was built in the 7th century CE by the ruling Pallavas. This view is based on references to the temple in the hymns of the Nayanmars (which, however, place it by a sea shore). Thirugnanasambandar's 6th song in Poompavaipathikam and Arunagirinathar's 697th song in Thirumylai Thirupugazh, make clear reference to the Kapaleeswarar temple being located on the seashore in Mylapore. The scholarly view that accounts for the discrepancies is that the original temple was built on the shore but was destroyed by the Portuguese, and the current temple (which is 1-1.5 km from the shore) was built by the Vijayanagar kings during the 16th century, using some remains of the old temple. There are inscriptions dating back to 12th century inside the temple. The temple's 120 ft gopuram was built during 1906 with stucco figures adorning it. |
